Merchant Marine Standard Uniform - Rank Insignia
Unlike military ranks, Merchant Marine (Commerical) Sailors do not have have ranks the stirps or Insignia that the crew wear signifies the positon of that person holds. Four strips for the Master and Cheif Engineer, 3 strips for First Mate and Second Engineer and so on, the less trips that the person has the lower positon on the vessel he/she has. To differ from each department that the person is in by the backgroud colour. Black with gold trips is for Deck Department, purple with gold strips if for Engineering Department, red is for Medical and gold and white strips with a balck background is Hotel Staff.
What is up with the diamond in some insignia? The diamond shows that the peson in a position which requires a licence. all Navigational Officer, Engineering Officers, and Medical Officers (Doctors) will have the diamond. Hotel Staff, Enviromental Officers, Deckhands, Oilers (Mechanical Assistants) do not get the diamond.
Some Countries or Companies may have sightly different insignia then what is shown below, but generally these are the most common design.
